about

Here's something you didn't know...

This is cobbled together from sections of a long poem I wrote in a pub when I was home for Christmas, near the church I used to sing in as a teenager. The music was deliberately Tom Petty-influenced and an 'arena' piece; I deliberately wanted to write something 'big' that we could close with live. I don't think it varies too much from my original demo musically but Dan, Ryan and Jess all sprinkled their customary magic dust on it.

lyrics

Lyrics:
I used to sing in church in my hometown
People came to watch and pray from miles around
I guess I kinda miss it, but I tend to play it down
I mean it’s 2019
Now I’m writing in a pub nearby, built 1705
Took 300 years for all these people to arrive
The bar girl tells an old man ‘we don’t serve food til 5’
And I’m as glad as him to be alive

If you should fall out of grace (fall out of grace)
Don’t let the moment slip away
Just take a stand
For prayer over poison
Thinking, not drinking
And we’ll be okay

And it’s taking me a little time adjusting to a straight line
After this traffic jam of the heart
A north London schoolboy acting like a cowboy
Who slept through the audition for the part
And I’m writing in a flat somewhere,
And I love a girl who’s sweet and fair
And I only took this job on for a stupid dare
The winter’s finally breaking, I can feel it in the air
Come Easter-time I might just get back there

Chorus repeat

And so on with the show
But if you really want to know
Then I’ll tell you

I used to sing in church in my hometown
The people shaking hands when the man came ‘round
Remembering things you did in the way back when
And feeling like you’re doing them again
